Description
A Victorian building with chillingly omnipresent architecture. The Hospital stands five stories above ground and three levels below in large grounds. The once bricked up windows are slowly being replaced with spacious and light admitting apertures.
Atmosphere
Turning the brooding building into a brighter place was a work of immense foresight. The institute now seeks to treat the mentally ill in ways that encourage healing and growth rather than locking them away and forgetting about them. Drugs and Electro-shock treatment are kept to a minimum in favour of exploring the shattered psyche of the patient. Dr Burton himself has gained renown due to his ground breaking treatment specialising in the problems of Schizophrenic patients. His successful therapies concentrate on giving the patients the opportunity to communicate with art. Given his patients the opportunity to express their fears and phobias in a personal way has lead to amazing break through as well as allowing the Institute to become self funding and independent.
While the majority of the Institute is clean and foward looking, the fact that it was created to house Americas worst cannot be ignored. The Basement levels are still among the most secure wings in the country and those prisoners and patients who cannot be housed elsewhere are still resident in the 'Dungeons'.
Story
Dr Burton discovered that for the mad, art is a release. Many schizophrenics need to communicate through representation. Burton set up a comfortable environment for them and funded it by selling their erratic, insane works that the patients create. Their Art is obsessive, pictures created from words, sentences, phrases, written again and again, Letters from a woman to her husband, the words spoken by devils to patients. Many contain oppressive forms like swastika and police, entities from their nightmares and from the media. The trend among Gotham's rich to covet the haunting and unique art of the insane is spreading through out the world of collectors.
