Physical Description
Carthephius stands roughly six feet tall, with short black hair and dark brown eyes. His skin has a leathery look to it from being out in the sun so often. He is in excellent physical condition, and carries himself as a soldier and general. He dresses in non-descript clothing to better blend in, preferring jeans and an old army coat when he can get away with it. A tattoo with Arabic writing adorns his right arm.
Carthephius wears the identity of Jonathan Black the way mortals wear coats. If one were to walk into a room it would be difficult to distinguish him from anyone else. His soldierly precision gives way to a friendly and relaxed demeanour. He favours casual and functional clothing, always dressing appropriately for the occasion.
Personality
Carthephius is an honorable man who cannot stand dishonesty in any form. He has been alive for 2000 years and he's growing board. There is no new place for him to go, merely a place to return to. He's tired, and wants a new reason to live.
Carthephius is growing tired as the first touches of ennui have begun to set in. For 2000 years he has walked the Earth, fighting the good fight. There is nowhere new to go, only places to return to. He meets the same people over and over again and often realizes how a situation is going to play out before it begins.
He has immersed himself completely into the John Black identity, and sometimes forgets he's playing a role. When he's John, life almost takes on new joy as every little thing is something to celebrate.
Carthephius prefers to keep his identity a secret, and will avoid revealing his true nature if at all possible.
Story
Time has twisted Carthephius's history so badly that few remember it clearly. He was Roman officer in the Legions with a bright future ahead of him when he came to the attention of the Cult of Isis. With Horus in the lands of the dead, there was no one to stop them from pursuing him.
It was during this time that Carthephius's sister was tortured, raped, and murdered by the monster Barabbas. The Roman's parents had been killed years earlier in a fire, and the two siblings had been close. Barabbas was caught, convicted, and sentenced to death by crucifixion.
Just before the sentence was to be carried out, Barabbas was pardoned, and a madman claiming to be the King of the Jews took his place. The next morning, the governor refused to explain the decision and Barabbas was gone, so Carthephius went to the Jewish king, a carpenter's son named Jesus, to demand an explanation.
He's never spoken of what occurred that day.
Three days later, Carthephius joined the ranks of the Undying. He served Horus faithfully for ages, breaking away in the 12th century. He still fights the forces of Apophis, but has chosen to take humanity's side in the great Jyhad, and seeks to help them as best he can.
Carthephius tries to be a candle in the dark world, providing a little warmth and hope where he can.
He's lived a long and colorful life. Having recently arisen, he came to Gotham because it seemed as good as the next place. Carthephius has grown bored, and ennui is starting to set in. He hopes that in Gotham, he can find a cause to fight for which will give his life meaning.
