Maurice Bętenoir

Maurice 2
Race Vampire
Splat Followers of Set
Title Hougoun

Physical Description
Being a 20-something looking male of Haitian descent, Maurice has very dark skin, which has gained a slightly ashy pallor since his embrace. He has thick dark rasta locks and an ugly scar, that reaches from just under his left eye down to slightly above his collarbone, marring his face and neck (Flaw: Disfigurement). He usually wears dark leather trousers and an old greyish jacket, so that his muscular body is there for everyone to see. Around his neck he wears a necklace made out of leather cords into which bone chips are worked, which sports a silver serpent at its end. He usually carries a walking cane that is topped by a messing pommel, which looks like a ball of tangling serpents.

Personality
The Black Beast has many faces. To most people he appears as a dark tribal demon, who cows most thoughts of opposition by his mere presence. He grew up on the streets of le quartier haitien of Darktown, a quarter of the ghetto where mostly Haitians live, and this shows, as he has a thick French accent, that he doesn´t bother to get rid of. Usually he appears tough and deadly, but amongst his Gang, the children of the night, he appears as a caring father figure, albeit a twisted one. Most of the time his mannerisms are influenced by his adherence to the voodoo religion.

Story
Maurice grew up on the dirty streets of Darktown, in the quartier haitien. Haitian immigrants made up most of the population of that part of town. Every part of life there is permeated by the voudun religion, that reigns supreme there. People worship the loas and are in awe and in fear of their dark father figure, the Houngan Saturday. Together with his female counterpart, the Mambo Renair, he rules the streets and the hearts of his subjects.
One of the instruments of control were les filles de la nuit, a street gang with a religious twist. Maurice, living on the streets, gravitated naturally towards the gang and became a member. He rose through their ranks during the conflict with the other, more traditional, gangs of Darktown. Like tendrils les filles crawled out of the Haitian Quarter and spread throughout Darktown. They subjugated all the gangs, making them dependant on the goodwill of the children. Out of the ashes of that conflict, the Black Beast was born, and Maurice, now a loa-in-flesh, became the undisputed leader of the gang. They took control of nearly all illict activities in Darktown and came to the attention of the Family for the first time. A tentative cooperation was struck, a cooperation that may grow in the future or may turn sour and lead to another bloody conflict.
